spectacular class 3-4 whitewater that is unique, dynamic, powerful, and provides a
variety of options for differing experiences (changes in slalom design, a variety of
play waves, and a variety of challenging maneuvers on the course).
Additionally, Durango hosts a number of top -level competitors and competitive
programs that desire a year round training facility for both freestyle and slalom.
These users currently utilize the Smelter Boating Park for these training purposes on
a daily basis.
Associated Design Criteria
■ Must have quality whitewater that is appropriate for surfing,
challenging boating and competitive events including dynamic
and powerful world class competitive events during run -off.
• Must have great play spots.
• Must have variety of paddling experiences to choose from.
• Must have a facility that contributes to the objectives of these
users, whether training for international level competition,
recreational usage, or preparation for more difficult river running
outside of the park.
• Must have a year round training facility that augments the current
programs and facilities in and around the City.
Retailers/ Residents
Riverside business and residents also have a stake in this project. The people of the
City will seek out riverside trails for cool walks and runs and they will seek out
popular boating spots for spectator activities. Riverside businesses will want a link to
the activities on the water —if for no other reason than aesthetic appeal. These local
businesses and residents will desire trail and road access to and from the river as well
as selected bank improvements to provide attractive riverside seating and viewing.
These businesses, in general, would seek out a destination that is close to Durango's
a

16
