It is recommended that the total net recharge that occurs via the canal be prorated to the
various canal segments based on the percent representation of the segment (see Table
2).
For both recharge ponds and canal segments, the estimated SDF factors should be
used to determine when recharge water reaches the South Platte River (see Tables 1
and 2). Daily net recharge values should be summed on a monthly basis and be lagged
to the river using the SDF View computer model.
Accounting
To adequately quantify recharge to the South Platte River that will result from the
operation of the recharge project, it will be necessary to standardized measurement
collection and reporting methods. This standardization will also be important for
purposes of leasing any excess credits that the project may produce.
The following list summarizes data collection that should be made in the operation of this
recharge project:
• Union Ditch river headgate diversions (recorded daily).
• Inflow to recharge ponds (recorded daily).
• Staff gage readings at recharge ponds (recorded at least monthly).
The following list summarizes calculations that should be made on a monthly basis from
the data collected in the recharge project:
• Evaporation and evapotranspiration at each recharge pond and canal segment.
• Net recharge at each recharge pond and canal segment.
• Stream accretion in river using SDF values for recharge ponds and canal
segments.
Recommended example accounting forms are included in Appendix B.
Recommended Implementation Plan
This section recommends a general plan for implementing the recharge project.
The first step should be to firm recommendations for the proposed sites by performing
cursory field investigations, which might include some light backhoe work. Based on the
findings of these initial investigations, it may be of interest to drill test holes to better
understand the potential for water infiltration into the aquifer. However, it is generally
believed that there is a layer of gravel just below the top soil at the proposed sites, which
is a favorable infiltration material. For this reason, it may not be necessary to perform
extensive geology tests to analyze soil infiltration characteristics, as they are likely
feasible for ground water recharge.
The next step should be to excavate the pond(s) and set up for water delivery and
measurement to the site(s). Once the project is operational, water delivery to the site(s),
Aqua Engineering, Inc. Recharge Project Potential
February 17, 2004 - 14-
