SECTION V
SELECTED ALTERNATIVE
Description
The selected project is Alternative 3— Construct the enlarged Ziegler Reservoir. This
project consists of reconstructing an enlarged zoned earth embankment dam,
emergency spillway and connections to the pump house; relocating the Ziegler
residence driveway above the new high water line; and excavating the reservoir bottom
to increase storage. Copies of the design drawings are included in Appendix C.
The project consists of four main features:
1. Construction of a new zoned earthfill embankment. The entire existing Ziegler
Dam will be removed and reconstructed.
2. Construction of an emergency spillway and low level outlet with connection to the
pump station on the right abutment.
3. Excavation of the reservoir bottom and rim to achieve the storage required to
meet the District's needs.
4. Relocating the Ziegler residence driveway around the reservoir site to above the
new high water line.
A hydrology report, geotechnical report, design report, final design drawings, and
technical specifications were prepared and submitted in November 2010 to the Colorado
State Engineers Office (SEO) for review, in accordance with Rules and Regulations for
Dam Safety and Dam Construction, January 1, 2007 (Rules). The hydrology report,
geotechnical report, design report, and technical specifications are not included with this
report; copies of these documents can be provided to CWCB, if requested.
Removal of the existing dam embankment, excavation of the reservoir bottom, and
relocation of the Ziegler driveway were begun in the fall of 2010 to help expedite the
anticipated 2011 construction schedule.
The existing Ziegler Reservoir Pump Station contains the valving and pumping
capabilities to allow the reservoir to be filled and/or pump back to the District treatment
facilities.
,a u.
