other reservoirs, and improving springs ' yields. Recently when water usage
exceeded the treatment plant capacity, watershed yield, and/or raw water
transmission pipe capacity, they made three taps into the Ute Water Conservancy
District water system. These taps (3-inch, 4-inch, and 10-inch) have served as
a stop-gap solution during problem periods. The 3" tap is used regularly
during high use periods while the 4" tap is used at the high school only
when the Town lines are being repaired and for additional fire protection.
Connection to the 10" tap was made in mid-1976.
Grand Junction, approximately 13 miles east of Fruita, is the
nearest major city. The average elevation in Fruita is 4510 feet above sea
level and the watershed is approximately 9000 feet above sea level . The
terrain near town is flat to gently rolling with vegetation primarily
consisting of irrigated agricultural crops. Terrain in the watershed is
moderately steep to steep with a good forest of aspen and fir trees and a
mixed ground cover.
Fruita's climate is typical of the mountain desert in that there
are wide seasonal and daily temperature variations. Summer temperatures
above 100° F or below 50° F are not uncommon. Winter temperatures range
from below 0° F to above 50° F. The maximum and minimum recorded temperatures
are 108° F and -29° F, respectively. Average monthly temperature data are
presented in Figure 1-3.
Most rainfall in the Grand Valley area occurs in the form of high
intensity, short duration thunderstorms, accompanied by high winds. Winds
of 66 miles per hour have been recorded at Walker Field in Grand Junction.
The maximum individual storm recorded at Grand Junction produced 1 .57 inches
of rain. Average monthly precipitation is presented in Figure I-3.
There are no known records of temperature or precipitation for the
watershed area.
I-2
