QUARTERLY SUMMARY OF GRANT ACTIVITY OCTOBER 1992 - DECEMBER 1993 I. Wetlands Resource Group During this time period, the department's internal steering committee (Peter Evans and Kate Jones, Executive Director's Office, DNR; Patsy Goodman and Don Smith, Colorado Division of Wildlife; Steve Dougherty of ERO Resources Corporation; and Susan Foster of Thorne Ecological Institute) clarified the role of the Wetlands Resource Group. A list of members was then formulated, based on a its the group's clarified role of providing input from as many diverse groups as possible with interest in wetlands policies. The group will help ensure that the public information and public outreach efforts under this grant will succeed. A list of the members of the Wetlands Resource Group is attached to this summary. The group met for the first time on October 27 and agreed that members would like to take a field trip to familiarize themselves with wetlands basics. This field trip was conducted by Susan Foster and Steve Dougherty on Nov. 13, 1992 in the area of Chatfield Reservoir in the southwest Denver metro area. Group members observed a variety of wetlands and riparian ecosystem types and discussed both successful and unsuccessful mitigation strategies demonstrated there. The group's next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 1, 1993. II. Wetlands Field Workshops (see attached Quarterly Report from Thorne Ecological Institute) The concept of the wetlands workshop has been refined. Three workshops will now be held regionally across Colorado to capture local wetlands interests and issues. Members of local business, agricultural, civic and legislative communities will be invited to each workshop. In addition, a fourth workshop will be targeted specifically for state legislators. Based on this new format, a variety of potential sites have been surveyed, and Susan Foster is currently surveying members of the Wetlands Resource Group to find out when organizations representing their area of expertise have annual or regional meetings. As much as possible, Thorne Ecological Institute will try to dovetail the wetlands workshops to these meetings, in order to capture the largest audiences of decision - makers possible. Foster, Steve Dougherty and Dr. David Cooper are working to refine the workshops' format. Content and focus will be discussed with the Wetlands Resource Group at its February meeting.
