C. GRAND MESA PROJECT
The Grand Mesa Project was envisioned in the early 1980's as a multi-
purpose water storage project that would improve the irrigation water supply to
about 13,000 acres of highly productive land currently under irrigation. It was
intended to provide storage for available water without injury to existing water
users. The dam was to be about 180 ft. high and impound 20,000 acre -ft of water
over a 350 acre surface area. Subsequent studies scaled back the storage area,
relocated the dam to a higher elevation, and became known as the West Fork Dam
Project. Unfortunately, the $20 million cost was determined to be beyond the
ability of the District to finance.
The Board of Directors of the District began to redefine the scope of the
Grand Mesa Project, taking interest in smaller reservoirs in the District which are
abandoned or in need of rehabilitation so that the District's decree from the Grand
Mesa Project could be used to fill smaller reservoirs.
