E. Water Quality
An often- overlooked factor in water storage is the importance of impounding water at high
altitude. At Lower Elevations, water is held at higher temperatures which promotes algae growth
and higher sedimentation -- two of the many items that makes raw water treatment difficult and
expensive. The third factor is pH, and while not as crucial as the two foregoing, it must be
adjusted as part of water treatment.
Water held at higher elevations can be delivered to treatment facilities in near - pristine condition
which reduces treatment, the need for settling of sediment and adjustments for salts (such as
selenium) which the stream acquires along the water course.
E
