Contents
Physical information of test fish was taken 1 or more days prior to being used for a sleeve valve
passage survival trial. To avoid handling stress to all test fish, only a subset of each group of test
fish was measured for total length (to the nearest millimeter) and then measured for body height
or width (to the nearest millimeter) using vernier dial calipers. Body height or width, whichever
appeared greater was measured to ensure that all test fish could physically pass through the 0.63
in sleeve valve holes. Fish greater than 0.63 in ( >16 mm) in height or width were excluded from
the sleeve valve passage test groups. Once a length to width or height ratio was determined for
each species, only the larger fish needed to be measured. Rainbow trout embryos typically
average 4 -6 mm and were not measured but were counted using a plastic spoon to scoop eggs out
of the incubation trays and in effort to mimic a water to water transfer.
Introducing Test Fish Upstream of Sleeve Valve
We determined the most appropriate method to introduce test specimens into the 48 inch
discharge pipe was to insert them through the 2 -inch air vacuum bleeder valve pipe immediately
upstream of the sleeve valve. A 2 -inch `y' steel coupler with a 2 -inch steel ball valve connected
to a 2 -in steel bell mouth was installed below the lower portion of the air vacuum bleeder valve.
Opening and closing the ball valve between sample insertions allowed the air bleeder valve to
retain its functionality when the discharge pipe was filled and pressurized by reservoir water.
The `y' coupler allowed for convenient access to the air bleeder valve port to insert the fish and
fish embryo samples while the discharge pipe was not under pressure. Fish were inserted into
the discharge pipe by quickly pouring the 5 -gal bucket sample through a funnel (5 x 20 x 4.5 in)
made from a plankton net that was fixed into the bucket lid (figure 10).
Figure 10. Inserting test fish through `y' steel coupler into 2 -inch air vacuum bleeder valve pipe
immediately upstream of the sleeve valve.
Page 19
