Irrigation
'
North Platte Project
Over 1.1 million acre -feet of storage
capacity are provided by project reservoirs
(an acre -foot of water is the amount of
water required to cover one acre one foot
deep). Ninety percent of this capacity is in
Pathfinder Reservoir. This water is used to
irrigate lands in eastern Wyoming and the
Nebraska Panhandle.
The most important crops include sugar
beets, dry and edible beans, corn, and
alfalfa hay. Since 1908, North Platte
Project lands have produced crops valued
at over $2 billion.
A full water supply is provided to four
irrigation districts whose distribution
systems were built by the government.
These lands are divided into the Interstate,
Northport, and Ft. Laramie Divisions.
The Interstate Division is located on the
north side of the river, mostly in Nebraska.
It contains one large district, the Pathfinder,
with 101,000 irrigable acres and an
additional 1,700 acres of non - district lands
in Wyoming.
The Northport Division contains the
smallest district, the Northport, with 16,000
irrigable acres. Water diverted near the
Wyoming- Nebraska state line is carried 80
miles through the privately owned Tri -State
Canal to the headgate of the Northport
Canal and lateral system.
The Ft. Laramie Division includes both the
Goshen and Gering -Ft. Laramie Irrigation
Districts. The Goshen contains 52,000
irrigable acres in Wyoming and the
Gering -Ft. Laramie contains 55,000
irrigable acres in Nebraska. These districts
are located on the south side of the river.
A supplemental water supply is provided
to nine water user associations having a
combined irrigable area of 109,000 acres.
These districts are known as Warren Act
contractors and have privately built
distribution systems.
Kendrick Project
Seminoe and Alcova Reservoirs provide
storage for the Kendrick Project. Project
water is used to irrigate 24,000 acres in the
Casper, Wyoming area.
5
