II. Vegetation Dynamics
Key Questions
1 What are the key processes and modes of vegetation removal (lateral /vertical erosion, ice, hydraulic stress, burial, dessication etc.)?
2 What hydraulic and sediment transport conditions prevent establishment of vegetation or remove vegetation from sand bars, islands and riverbanks?
3 What are the current trends in unvegetated and unobstructed channel widths?
A list of additional related questions is provided at the end of this worksheet.
of worK
specific interaction between flow, sediment transport, and vegetation at locations where vegetation plots on the river would be established. The
demography study would continue throughout the duration of the first increment while the other process investigations would focus in the first few years of
the first increment with some follow -up extending throughout. Because of the inherent uncertainties and non - idealized conditions that exist when
collecting data in the field, a laboratory component of data collection has been included. It utilizes a full scale outdoor facility where vegetation would be
grown on plots using sand representative of the Platte River and then subjected to a range of flow conditions.
Because lateral erosion processes are not well understood, yet observations have been made of lateral erosion of vegetation on the Platte River, a
lateral erosion processes (this would be coupled with lateral sediment erosion processes which is a component of the sediment investigation). Regarding
an investigation of trends, standardized criteria and methodologies for analyzing aerial photographs will be developed and then applied to existing
Budget Summary
Totals
Year 1
Year 2
Year 3
Year 4
Yrs 5 -13
Labor Cost
$795,000
$221,000
$129,000
$120,000
$120,000
$205,000
Direct Non -Labor Cost
$370,000
$47,000
$41,000
$41,000
$41,000
$200,000
Contract Services
$155,000
$65,000
$15,000
$35,000
$25,000
$15,000
Contingency
$330,000
$83,250
$46,250
$49,000
$46,500
$105,000
TOTAL
1 $1,650,0001
$416,2501
$231,2501
$245,0001
$232,5001
$525,000
25%
