15 <br />North and west of the Dissected Plains are the <br />Sandhills, a landform topographically unique in the <br />United States. This area is made up of sand dunes <br />held in place by a cover of native prairie grasses. <br />In the west the basin is largely undissected High <br />Plains or tables divided by major stream valleys. <br />The basin slopes from a high point of 5,424 feet <br />above mean sea level in the southwestern corner to <br />a low point of about 950 feet at the confluence of <br />the Platte and Missouri rivers. Figure 6 shows <br />points of equal elevation in the basin. Most streams <br />draining the basin run toward the east and <br />southeast and their slopes are fairly steep. The <br />Platte River falls on the average about six feet per <br />mile as it flows from the Wyoming border to the <br />Missouri River. <br />Figure 6 <br />LAND ELEVATIONS <br />
