GLOSSARY OF TECHNICAL TERMS (Continued) <br />UNDERSTORY <br />Vegetation that grows beneath forest canopy (i.e., shrubs and herbaceous (woody) <br />plants). <br />Chapter 4 <br />MOLLUSK <br />Any invertebrate of the Phylum Mollusca comprising the chitons, snails, bivalves, <br />squids, octupuses, etc. typically having a calcareous shell of one, two, or more <br />pieces that wholly or partly enclose the soft, unsegmented body. <br />POTENTIOMETRIC <br />The pressure exerted on groundwater. The potentiometric surface is the level to <br />which groundwater will rise by hydrostatic pressure. <br />REFUGIA <br />Surviving habitat material that has escaped extreme changes undergone by the <br />surrounding area, during a period of glaciation. <br />Chapter 5 <br />ENVIRONMENTALLY PREFERRED ALTERNATIVE <br />For the purpose of this EIS, the alternative that best ensures the quality of the <br />natural environment, with emphasis on riverine habitat. <br />xix <br />
