Appendix 3. Glossary of Terms
Glossary
Cartwheeling -a freestyle trick where the boat is rotated end for end vertically in a fashion similar
to that of a child doing a cartwheel on the ground.
Eddy -a region of the river that is protected from the river's flow. Often characterized by flow
separation boundaries known as eddy lines and flow reversal.
Freestyle kayaking -a competitive event held on whitewater where paddlers are judged based on
the quantity, style, and difficulty of tricks accomplished in a given time period. Usually held on
a large hydraulic feature.
Playboating -a form of recreational kayaking that focuses on tricks and surfing for recreation.
Slalom kayaking -a competitive event held on whitewater where paddlers are timed and judged as
they race through a section of obstacles hung from wires above the river.
Squirt Boating -a style of kayaking practiced in extremely small, extremely slim boats that are
designed to do tricks while submerged. This event relies heavily on fast water that has up and
down surges and strong eddy lines.
Standing wave -a wave on a river that does not move with relation to points on the river's bank.
Surf wave -a standing wave in a river that has the size and gradient necessary for a kayak to
remain on the wave, in the direct river's current, without forward propulsion.
Whitewater Rodeo -a freestyle event.
-21-
