The Buena Vista Boating Park
Background
The Buena Vista Boating park is unique among the parks that I have designed in that it
was, at least in its initial stage, entirely funded by private funds. The idea to create the park was
motivated by the tremendous success of the Salida Boating Park. Approval of the park went
through an extensive public process in Buena Vista, and was permitted for construction by the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The current park is a single drop structure that is located at the put -in for commercial
rafting along this stretch of the Arkansas. The design of the drop structure, was made to
accommodate a variety of different in- stream users including inflatable, and most levels of
whitewater canoe and kayakers. The design was also tailored to enhance the put -in area for the
commercial rafters along this stretch of the Arkansas.
Additional structures are planned for this boating park. These will be located
downstream of the existing structure. These structures are already funded and are expected to be
constructed in the near future.
Appropriateness of Reach
The Power Index for the existing drop structure at 120 cfs is 120. At the three planned
drops the P.I. at 120 cfs is 160. At 1800 cfs the PI is 3648. Again, a P.I. of over 75 would exist
at all flows in between 120 and 1800 cfs.
Other considerations also suggest that the B.V. Park is in an ideal location:
• It is located close to the central business district of Buena Vista and is situated such
that visitors to the park will use the central commercial district and benefit the
Town's economy
• Parking and other facilities are located near the park to accommodate visitors
• Improvements at the existing structure have already benefited the rafting industry in
the area
Uses of the Buena Vista Boating Park
The Buena Vista Boating Park has seen significant usage since its creation in 2002. The
park is expected to host freestyle events and is planned to integrate itself with ongoing
IM
