Other considerations also suggest that the Park is located in an ideal location:
• It is located directly adjacent to the central business district of Salida and the lower
section of the reach finishes in an existing City Park.
• Parking facilities are located in and around a boat ramp that sits mid -way through the
park.
• The City has attained right -of -ways for access along the entire reach of the park.
• The City of Salida has an avid boating community
Uses of the Salida Boating Park
In my opinion, the park has been a dramatic success and has become a major contributor
to the local economy. Since improvements have begun at the park usage has, in my opinion,
increased dramatically. During flows at the higher end of those claimed the river appears to be
in almost constant use. Top level boaters from around the state and country visit the site and use
it extensively. The completed park continues to host the FIBARK events, which now features
events in both the Upper and Lower holes, and also hosts training freestyle and slalom experts,
commercial use, and is scheduled to host parts of the downriver nationals this summer.
The Boating Park has been and will be very popular and has and will host numerous
events. This project already has been a tremendous success and has seen a tremendous amount of
usage due to the quantity of water, quality of whitewater, and easy access from many
communities in the region. At lowest flows, the Boating Park is mainly used by tubers, canoers,
floaters and novice kayakers and rafters to practice their skills on moving water, the site is also
one of Colorado's only low water slalom training sites. At higher flows, it is used for events, as
well as for play, boating, slalom, downriver etc.
Use of the Boating Park occurs at many times throughout the boating season. Due to the
centralized location and large group of active local boaters, this site already hosts major
whitewater freestyle events that encourage visitors to the Town. When flows are adequate, use
of the Boating Park for a variety of types of boating occurs, including kayaking, canoeing,
rafting, inflatable boating, and other such general recreation uses. The park is designed to
accommodate all of these users but sees higher use, and therefore more benefit to the
community, at the higher end of the flows claimed.
-5-
