Waterfowl hunting and bird watching along the Central <br />Platte River are popular recreation activities. Pheasant, geese and/or duck hunting are allowed at <br />wildlife management areas, private clubs and private lands along the river during their respective <br />seasons. Hunting is one of the most economically valuable land uses along the river because <br />hunters are willing to pay relatively high fees for the privilege. <br />Because the Central Platte River is an important part of the Central Flyway, the area is teaming <br />with migratory birds during five weeks in the Spring. The study area is known for its large <br />concentrations of sandhill crane during this period. Visitors come to experience the beauty and <br />sounds of over ten million migratory waterfowl including cranes, ducks and geese. In the study <br />area, bird watching tours are offered at the National Audubon Society's Rowe Sanctuary, and at <br />the Crane Meadows Nature Center.
