-3- <br />Julesburg Reservoir was filed under the name of Jumbo Reservoir on April 7, 1904, Filing No. <br />1377 of the State Engineers Office. The reservoir's normal water surface is on the order of <br />1,400 acres with a normal storage capacity of 22,700 acre -feet (based on a storage capacity <br />provided by the District) at Gage 24.0. It is an off - channel reservoir filled by Harmony Ditch, <br />which diverts water from the South Platte River. Five earthen embankment dams are <br />constructed to create the reservoir. The outlet works for the reservoir is located in the <br />northern portion of the eastern most embankment (Dam 4) and discharges into the Highland <br />Canal. The spillway is located in a natural depression immediately north of 'Dam 4. Spillway <br />flows are discharged into Cottonwood Creek, which in- turnflows into the South Platte River. <br />The embankments are also called dams in this report for consistency of terminology with the <br />previous studies. We assume that the materials for the original construction of embankments <br />were obtained locally from excavation within the reservoir, and in some cases, outside the <br />reservoir areas. >- <br />Little is known of the construction of the rese. %It does not appear that trench -type of -- <br />cut -offs were was onstructed below the embankment foundations. <br />The normal reservoir operating level is elevation 3707.0, which corresponds to Gage 24.0. <br />The nominal dam crest elevation is 3715.0, which corresponds to Gage 32.0. <br />2.2 Dam 1 <br />Dam 1 is an approximately, 2,500 foot long earthen embankment. The upstream slope of the <br />embankment is approxirnateiy 2.8:1 (horizontal:vertical) for a height of 12 feet, below which <br />there is a considerable silted area with a significantly flatter slope. The downstream slope <br />varies between 1.7 to 2.6:1. <br />Considerable amount of seepage has been observed downstream of Dam 1. The seepage is <br />in the form of point discharges at a few locations and seepage exiting at the interface of the <br />overburden and bedrock. Small gullies have been formed by point discharges flows. Slope <br />stability analyses performed indicate an adequate factor of safety for this embankment if the <br />2 \reports \97- 1- 500.nk <br />
