i
-2-
1.0 SCOPE OF STUDY
This report presents the results of rehabilitation and enlargement study of the existing
Julesburg Reservoir and the feasibility of providing additional storage capacity by raising the
storage level of the existing reservoir, raising the present dams to accommodate additional
storage and /or by reconstruction of new dams. The location of Julesburg Reservoir is in Logan
and Sedgwick Counties as shown on Fig. 1. The study was.- performed in accordance with our
proposal to Julesburg Irrigation District, dated April 199`7.
A site reconnaissance was conducted to observe -the existing facilities, including the
embankment dams, outlet works and potential borrow sources,, and to discuss the various
options with Mr. Larry Frame of Julesburg Irrigation District.: The existing data, primarily
consisting of previous engineering studies and investigations performed by W.W. Wheeler &
Associates, Kumar & Associates and" ';Chen &- Associates; were reviewed for
geologic /geotechnical conditions, design parameters and-,the results of previous construction
materials testing. The results of the site reconnaissance and review of existing data were used
along with our experience with this facility to =arrive at different options for rehabilitation and
for the feasibility of storing additional water.
This report summarizes the results of our study, provides a cost estimate for various
alternatives, and presents our conclusions and recommendations.
2.0 HISTORY OF RESERVOIR AND DESCRIPTION OF EXISTING FACILITIES
2.1 General
Julesburg Reservoir is located in Sections 12, 13, 14 and 24, T.1 1 N., R.48W., and Sections
7, 8, 17, 18 and 19, T:1 1 N., R.47W. The reservoir is approximately 2.5 miles north of South
Platte River just southwest of Cottonwood Creek. The drainage tributary to the reservoir is
approximately 6.7 square miles. The reservoir and dam facilities are owned by the Julesburg
Irrigation District (District).
21reports197- 1- 500.nk
