TEACHING THE POETRY OF RIVERS <br />The Foundation for Water Education recently released a new <br />online program for teachers called Teaching the Poetry of Rivers. <br />The program provides free online lesson plans addressing the <br />interdisciplinary study of watersheds and poetry, and assists <br />students to develop submissions to the River of Words <br />Poetry Contest. The program is currently accept- <br />ing teachers to implement and review its <br />preliminary version. <br />The program includes <br />five self -paced lesson plans <br />integrating culture, history, o <br />poetry and watershed science. <br />Step-by-step instruction for a 4oe <br />teaching students the process age <br />of writing poetry is provided, as <br />well as readings, activities, pho- V ,c a , <br />tographs and Internet links related 4» <br />to each lesson. Each lesson is also correlated to the Colorado <br />Student Assessment Program Standards (CSAP). Developed by <br />accomplished poet and teacher Dr. Kathryn Winograd, this <br />program attempts to help teachers integrate science, <br />writing, and critical thinking skills. <br />The River of Words Poetry Contest is an annual <br />environmental poetry contest for children ages S <br />through 19. Over 200 entries were received in <br />Colorado last year. Awards are presented at the <br />state level, with the award winners presenting <br />their work at a celebration at the Governor's <br />mansion.
