DRC April 13 & 14 Meeting Notes
Page 2
P_r_o_gram_e_le_m_e_n_t_s_ - The following individuals were given assignments to
describe general stategies for each recovery element. These strategies
should be general, broad statements that describe the direction we want
to take. Send your strategies to Bob Caskey by May 13.
Habitat Management - Sue Uppendahl
Habitat Development & Maintenance - Tom Nesler
Stocking of Native Fish Species - Nesler /Harris
Nonnative Species and Sportfishery Mgt - Bill Elmblad
Research, Monitoring, and Data Mgt - Don Horak
Section 7 - Peter Evans
Sufficient_progress - although there was a discussion on this issue, no
decisions or assignments were made.
I_R_O's - Bob Caskey feels it is critical the IRO document be adopted as a
useful tool by the Management Committee and that it should be expanded to
include the entire Upper Basin.
M_ a_ n_ a _gement_C_o_m_m_it_te_e_a_genda - we should use this forum to bring up the
propagation facilities bottleneck. We should demand a complete and
accurate report of what happened at Dexter concerning the fish kill. We
should oppose FWS stocking policies for native and nonnative fishes and
make it clear that FWS does not have veto authority.
May_7_ meeting _with_Caskey,_Mills :_and_Shanks - write down issues of where
-- -- --- ----- - - - --
we are having problems with FWS and send to Caskey. Two suggested issues
were the way the newspaper article explained the Dexter fish kill and the
accuracy of the information in the Larry Shank's letter of fish held by
FWS.
On a tangential note to this discussion, everyone should write down
the chronology of events where endangered fish and progeny have
been lost or destroyed while in the possesson of FWS. Also write
down instances where FWS has violated their own policies. Send
comments to Caskey over the next couple of months.
_Co_lo_rad_o_propagation_plan - because of what happened at Dexter and
because of the lack of a comprehensive plan for the RIP, Kochman sees DOW
preparing its own propagation plan for native fishes. Larry Harris will
write a broad concept on what our native fish hatchery program should
look like to include hatcheries and refugia. Harris will figure out how
many acres of ponds we need to take care of squawfish currently at the
research hatchery and will look into obtaining the Craig sewage ponds.
Elmblad will look into building another refugia at Walker or in the Grand
Valley. To prepare this plan we need to identify seperate endangered
fishes stocks, and identify hatchery needs and refugia /holding facility
needs by number and acreages of ponds.
