3
In summary, the Biology Committee endorses the implementation of the six
recommendations. Furthermore the committee believes that the effectiveness of
the recommendations would be substantially diminished if not enacted as a
package. It should however be noted that the Recovery Program is already
implementing some of Stanford's recommendations and that the level of detail
and the precise form in which some the recommendations would be implemented
needs to be formulated.
Genetics Guidelines Document
The Biology Committee was originally scheduled to receive the draft Genetics
Management Guidelines by October 15, review and return comments to the
Propagation Coordinator after the November 15 -16 meeting so that the document
could be finalized by December 15 (see September 93 meeting summary for
Biology Committee). The document was not mailed to committee members until
November 9 and as such the committee was unable to conduct a full review at
its November meeting. The committee, however, offers the following concerns
and suggestions based on its preliminary review.
- There appears to be a general slippage of the schedule for this report.
The Scope of Work revised October 29, 1993 which covers this document -
now identifies a final due April 15, 1994 rather than original December
deadline.
- Although an in depth review has not been conducted, the committee
expressed concern over the whether the document is specific enough in
its conclusions /recommendations. The report appears to be a very
complete compendium of genetics related as well as other unrelated
information such as general Recovery Program background materials.
However, the committee still is concerned that justifications-for the
procedures as fundamental as the 5X5 paired matings currently used by
the Program and basic justification of presumptive stocks are not
clearly stated.
The committee recognizes that some of the information it is looking for
may in fact be contained in the Genetic Management Plan rather than the
Guidelines. However, it is unclear to the Committee exactly where its
concerns will be addressed.
Given these concerns and an unwillingness by the Biology Committee to accept a
final report ;not, due until April 15, 1994 we propose the following.
1) The Biology Committee -will review the current draft document and return
comments to a working group composed of Biology committee members by
December.15-.
2) The Genetics Panel should concurrently review the document and copy
their comments to the Biology Committee chairman by December 13 for
consideration by the working group. As part of the Panel's review the
committee feels that it is important the Genetics Panel understand the
type of information required by the Program from the Guidelines
document.
3) The Biology Committee Work Group will consolidate comments on the draft
document by December 17 and submit them to the Propagation Coordinator
