2) ORCHARD MESA IRRIGATION DISTRICT
- Private irrigation district serving approximately 9,000 acres south of the
Colorado River.
- Primarily a pumped system, no storage.
- Uses hydraulic turbine pumps to lift irrigation water to service area.
- Shares powerplant revenues with Grand Valley Water Users' Association.
- Operates "check" and bypass channel to avoid calls by GVIC and to maximize
power generation.
- At maximum irrigation- season diversion and usage levels, OMID can demand
up to 460 cfs for irrigation/pumping and 310 cfs for hydroelectric power.
- At less than full irrigation demand, up to 400 cfs can be used to generate
hydroelectric power.
- In winter, and when irrigation demand by others diminishes, OMID can
increase its hydroelectric power demand until the power canal reaches capacity
of about 860 cfs.
- Relies on Green Mountain Reservoir storage for irrigation water when natural
supplies are insufficient.
3) GRAND VALLEY WATER USERS' ASSOCIATION
- Serves approximately 32,000 acres including two small irrigation districts of
the north Colorado River, above GVIC service area.
- Gravity system, negligible storage.
- Created to operate the U.S. Reclamation Service's Grand Valley Project.
- Shares power revenues with OMID.
- Has diversion protected by OMID operating "check."
- Has capacity to demand 850 cfs for irrigation, including service to two small
irrigation districts with senior rights totaling 120 cfs.
- Relies on Green Mountain Reservoir storage for irrigation when natural
supplies are insufficient.
The Grand Valley Water Users' Association, the Orchard Mesa Irrigation District (OMID),
the Palisade Irrigation District (PID), and the Mesa County Irrigation District (MCID) all
divert from the Colorado River at the Government Diversion Dam. This dam in known
locally as the Roller Dam, the Cameo Dam or the Cameo Diversion.
2
