of the United States who was willing to see the picture far ahead and
not the one immediately before then :.
We couldn't build Glen Canyon Dare today, do you realize that?
No chance in the world. I don't even believe we could build the Flaming
Gorge Project today. And, I know darn well we couldn't build the
Curecanti Project in today's world. 5o, as we cone to share in this
little celebration and feel a little bit proud of ourselves, let's keep
in mind that we were working at the right period in American history
to get the job done that had to he done.
It isn't finished. It is my opinion that someday it will be
finished because if there's anything true in Reclamation nest, espe-
ciallyin the States of the origin of water, it is this, that any reser-
voir that will hold water and has good water to put in it, I care not
for the benefit -cost ratio, is a good project. And, if it isn't a
good project, then we might as well throw up our hands right now and
let the water go down to help make the Central Arizona Project a good
project. It must be more than the project that was authorized because
as it now stands they must use some of our water in order to make it
a feasible project.
I think that's all I wish to say unless you have some questions.
If you have any questions about my good friend of the ranking minority,
I will try to answer them. Or, if you have any questions about that
Conference Committee operation I would like to answer the questions as
to what has to be done in order to get the job taken care of.
I want you to know that I'm very pleased -- I was there at Glen
Canyon when it filled last year. Bill Plummer took care of that for
Ival and me and some of the others. I never had a better moment in my
life. I didn't think it would ever fill. I'll be honest with you.
(Laughter). No way in the world would they ever put 27 million acre -
feet plus in that reservoir. Slave Brower didn't think so either.
To come here today on a Silver Anniversary -- Silver Jubilee --
of what I consider to be a great undertaking by local people, local
officers, Congressmen, and bureaucrats dedicated to the job, all working
together, is one of the outstanding fetes in the annals of this country.
Thank you very much.
7
