The length of the growing season in the
Longmont area is 140 days with the average for the last killing frost in the spring being May 11
and the first killing frost in the fall being September 28.
LAND OWNERSHIP
The land in the project service is primarily private farms, ranches, and some individual home
sites. All of the agricultural land serviced by the SIDC is privately owned.
WATER RIGHTS
The Supply Ditch Company has issued 400 shares of water stock which is presently owned by 164
stockholders. Of the 400 shares of stock, 387.5 shares are privately owned with 12-1/2 shares
owned by a municipality.
The Supply Ditch has historically irrigated 8500 acres of land. The water for irrigation is supplied
, by a direct flow decree of 92.2 cfs in addition to water from Beaver Park Reservoir which has the
following decrees.
TABLE 1
BEAVER PARK RESERVOIR
DECREES
Relative Priority Decree Amount in Acre-Feet Appropriation Date
41 888 June 30,1892
58
70
960
336
January 21, 1902
September 20, 1905
A previous analysis was conducted by Rocky Mountain Consultants (RMC) for the City of
Longmont to determine the yield of the system. The following is an excerpt from that study which
provides a good accounting of the water use and yields.
"An analysis of the yields of the Supply ditch, including both direct flow and storage decrees,
indicates that on an average basis, this system will yield 0.60 acre-feet of water per acre of land.
For the reservoir decrees, it is found that this system will yield 0.15 acre-feet per acre of land
irrigated. On a per share basis, this computes to be 12.82 acre-feet of water per share on an
average basis, and 0.63 acre-feet per share on a safe yield basis."
This is based on an analysis of 20 years of record from 1949 to 1968 of the diversions made by
the Supply Ditch Company with the safe yield determined using the year 1954 which was the
Knoth Reservoir-Feasibility Study Page 4
