►-• <br />State of Colorado <br />Project No. F- 33 -R -3 <br />• <br />4 <br />Name Water Pollution Studies <br />I -- <br />• <br />Period Covered: March 1, 1967 to December 31, 1967 <br />ABSTRACT <br />This report covers the results of studies on the pollution effect on <br />Colorado streams or rivers caused by effluents of the mining and milling <br />industry. <br />INTRODUCTION <br />Water resources in the State of Colorado are becoming more widely <br />utilized by industry, agriculture and recreation to keep pace with a rapidly <br />expanding population. As the demands of both industry and agriculture in- <br />crease, the use of water for fish production and fishing recreation are <br />diminished. In the State of Colorado, we now have many miles of streams <br />which are severely damaged by chronic pollution from industries. <br />In the high mountain streams, we now have pollution from mines and <br />mills processing lead, zinc, gold, silver and other metals. The demand for <br />these metals, especially silver, has resulted in new interest and activity <br />among silver interests to open some of the old mines which have been inact- <br />ive for many years. In a number of these areas, the streams have recovered <br />from past damage and now support a fine fishery. It is the concern of the <br />Colorado Game, Fish and Parks Department to maintain these areas and prevent <br />their destruction by future pollutants. <br />Existing and operating mills are currently polluting many miles of <br />streams, and we have been analyzing these waters to determine the extent of <br />
