•
Platoro Reservoir Restoration Project
Scope of Work (Valve Replacement)

Platoro Reservoir is on the Conejos River and tributary to the Rio Grande River in south central
Colorado. It is an earth filled dam with an embanlanent height of 165 feet and a capacity of 59,570AF.
The facility is operated and maintained by the Conejos Water Conservancy District.
This project repairs, replaces, and upgrades components of the Platoro Reservoir. Recent efforts funded
from other sources include installing a bypass piping system to maintain minimum flows during
construction and re-coating of the penstocks. The WSRA grant will replace the two valves and operators
on the dam. The project will help keep the Platoro Reservoir facility in working order so that Colorado
can continue to meet its obligations under the Rio Grande Compact and provide for flood conh-ol,
irrigation, river fishery, endangered species protection, dam safety, and recreation, for the 100,000 acre
District service area. 'The project will restore the Reservoir to full operating functionality so it can
continue to sustainably meet the agricultural demands of the District and therefore optimize existing and
future water supplies.
The District anticipates the valve replacement work will be completed in October 2009 or 2010 if CWCB
funds are not available in time for a 2009 construction season. Scope of work for this activity involves:
1. Removal of the existing operator unit
2. Removal of a portion of the floor as designed by the USBR
3. Removal of the valve and loading it for salvage
4. Preparing existing pipe for new valve
5. Installing new valve, actuators, switches and associated components
6.
