410 3.0 Monitoring Well Construction
Monitoring wells /piezometers will be installed using a modified drive point method where a hole
is drilled with a Giddings Auger Drilling Rig and then a 1 -inch PVC casing will be jetted in the
hole using water or air. The PVC casing will be slotted on the bottom one -foot of casing and a
filter cloth placed around the slotted section. Monitoring wells will be installed as deep as
possible. It may not be possible to get the trailer- mounted Giddings Rig into some locations. In
such cases the monitoring wells will be jetted in using air or water supplied by long hoses from
an air compressor or high - pressure water pump. Hand augering will be the installation
procedure for the monitoring well located on the opposite bank of the river.
4.0 Aquifer Test Protocol
The aquifer test will consist of a minimum 10 -hour continuous pumping period, followed by a
recovery- monitoring period. The pumping may continue for a maximum of 7 -days if field data
indicates necessity. The recovery monitoring period will be of the same length as the pumping
period. Results of field data analyses will be used to adjust the pumping and recovery period, if
needed.
Pre -Test Monitoring: Pre -test monitoring of groundwater and stream elevations will be
performed to establish whether the aquifer is near steady -state conditions. In addition, the pre-
test monitoring will provide information on daily variability of stream and aquifer conditions.
Monitoring will be started at least three days prior to APT startup. Pre -test monitoring data will
be reviewed and a decision on startup will be made based on the analysis of this data.
Discharge Measurement: All water from the test will be discharged away from the pumping
well to the existing recharge pond served by the well. Discharge will be recorded from a
flowmeter every 5 minutes for the first hour and every 60 minutes for the next 9 hours and every
8 hours thereafter if pumping continues after 10 hours.
Groundwater Level Measurement: Water level measurements will be taken at each monitor
well and the pumping well using a pressure transducer /data logger. As a backup, manual
measurements may be taken using a water level indicator. Water level measurements during
the recovery period will be recorded with the same frequency as during the drawdown portion of
the test.
Stream Gage Measurement: Three stream elevation gages will be installed at the following
locations:
1. Adjacent to the pumping well
2. At the upstream flow monitoring location
3. At the downstream monitoring location
Stream elevation readings will be recorded using a pressure transducer /data logger.
Rain Gage Measurement: A rain gage will be installed at the site and data collected every
hour for the first 8 hours and a minimum of two times a day thereafter
Page 2 of 3
