DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR
Bureau of Reclamation
Region 7 Denver, Colorado 80225.
December 1969
NOTICE OF INIT IATIO14 O INVESTIG
Name of in vestigation: Armel Unit (Missouri River Basin, Colorado)
T ype o inv Feasibility grade for reauthorization
L ocation of i State of Colorado
Date of investigat initiated December 1969
Date inve to be colleted January 1973
1. Hi story and sc ope Of 2roposed inve
The Armel Unit (formerly St. Francis Unit) was authorized by the Flood
.Control Act of 1944. Bonny Dam and Reservoir were constructed in
advance of the finalization of irrigation plans as an emergency flood
control measure. Construction was completed in 1951. A definite plan
report relating to the irrigation features of the unit was completed
in April 1954. Construction of the irrigation facilities was deferred
because of a lack of interest in irrigation. Recently, the farmers
in the Armel area have indicated strong support for proceeding with
the construction of the Armel Canal and pumping plant to lift and
supply irrigation water to tablelands north and east of the dam,
and a distribution system of laterals and draws. Approximately
7,000 acres of land in the Armel area would be furnished a water
supply for irrigation. The 750 acres of irrigated lands under the
Hale Ditch would continue to be furnished a regulated water supply.
Passage of Public Law 88 -442 required that all units of the Hissouri
River Basin not under construction as of the date of that Act be
reauthorized by Congress. Therefore, a feasibility report for re-
authorization of the irrigation function will be prepared. -
2. Pro spective s wh ich w ill b e xplored:
Studies will involve plans for canals, laterals; drains, and pumping
plant to lift and supply irrigation water to serve approximately
7,000 acres of tableland. The water supply will be obtained from the
existing Bonny Dam and Reservoir.
