EXISTING DRAINAGE FACILITIES
At present there are numerous drainage problems throughout the area
which frequently cause trouble. Generally speaking, the existing drainage
facilities are not adequate to accommodate even the present run -off. As the
development increases, the run -off will increase with a corresponding increase
in the drainage problems.
The existing drainage facilities are limited primarily to a few road and
highway culverts. In the more highly developed subdivisions, curb and gutter
has been provided but these frequently are lacking a proper outlet channel,
and consequently, they simply concentrate the drainage rather than eliminate
it. At present the major problems are in Hunter Heights and Westwood Sub-
divisions (Points( 9 jand 10 ), and Houston Heights Subdivision (Points
15
11 to ).
In Westwood Subdivision, there is an existing 24 -inch concrete pipe which
is designed primarily to carry irrigation water through Westwood, Hunter
Heights, and Mountain View Acres to the farms north of the highway. Although
this pipe adequately serves as an irrigation structure, it is too small to
accommodate all the drainage waters collected at its inlet. Whenever this
pipe fails to carry the drainage water, the excess spreads over Westwood
Subdivision and flows into Hunter Heights.
In Hunter Heights the streets are generally on a minimum grade draining
to the north into two pipe culverts under the highway. At present these
highway culverts can accommodate all the storm water that is delivered to
their entrances. However, because of the fiat street grades and poor inlet
channels leading to the highway, it takes only a minor storm to cause flood-
ing in Hunter Heights, while the highway culverts are running only partially
full.
- 8 -
