PIPELINE FROM SETTLING BASINS TO FILTERS Settled water is passed
through a 24 -inch concrete pipe from the settling basin effluent weir to the
filter influent trough. Both the original filters and the outside filters
can be served by this line. However, in recent years, a separate influent
line has been built to the outside filters. This was done to allow the
interior filters to be isolated from the outside ones and thus gain additional
plant flexibility. Capacity of the 24 -inch concrete line mentioned exceeds
20 MGD when flowing full.
RAPID SAND FILTERS As previously mentioned, the original filter house
(Figure 9) contained six rapid sand filters. Each of these filters has a
sand surface of 280 square feet and has a conservative rating of 0.80 MUD
filtering capacity. This capacity could be extended to 1.0 MGD without
seriously effecting the final quality of the water but would result in
shorter filter runs between backwashing operations.
Figure 9
- 33 -
