SETTLING BASINS (Figure 8) Originally, this unit was a single flow- <br />' through chamber. It has been divided into two sections and the chemically <br />' treated water is fed into a center influent flume on each section and is <br />collected at both ends of each section. There are three collection manifolds <br />at each end of each section. Surface water enters these manifolds through <br />5 -inch upright nozzles attached to the manifold on approximate 38 -inch <br />centers. Water decanted from the surface of these basins is transported to <br />a single effluent chamber in which is installed a level- control weir. <br />Laboratory tests conducted to determine necessary settling time have <br />indicated that sufficient retention time is available to handle the over -all <br />plant capacity provided that a well- formed floc is introduced to the settling <br />basins. Calculations were based on a linear velocity of 0.50 feet per minute. <br />Figure 8 <br />- 32 - <br />
