-4--
samples taken during flooding and /or from a profile
survey and re- survey of stream cross - sections to be
permanently monumented and precisely measured as to
elevation.
f. Ground water changes from an analysis of well observations
and yield data along the flood plain.
The four recording rain gages have been installed, one in each of the
three main watershed divisions (see map), and one close to the work unit
headquarters in Kiowa. They are to be inspected, maintained, - and operated
by the U. S. Weather Bureau with assistance from SCS personnel and District
co- operators. The standard gages are located throughout the project area
with District co- operators as observers and are to be inspected and main-
tained by the Weather Bureau.
& stream gaging station has been installed by the U. S. Geological Survey
above Elbert on East Kiowa Creek and another above the town of Kiowa on
the main channel of Kiowa Creek. Maintenance and operation of these gages
will be by USGS with SCS assisting as needed.
Total sediment load will be measured by USGS at or near these two gaging
sites with equipment, services, operation, and maintenance being furnished
by USGS in fiscal years 1956, 1957, and 1958 in accord with agreement
between SCS and USGS.
Five detention structures have been selected to measure sedimentation and
volume of flood flows. Water stage recorders are being installed by USGS
in each of these reservoirs. USGS will operate these in fiscal 1956, 1957,
and 1958. Crest gages are to be installed in the channels a short distance
above and below each of these detention structures and two crest gages are
planned at other points in stream channels where a record of peak flows is
desired. The SCS will inspect and reset each crest gage after each storm
that might be gaged. A permanent record of these peak flows will be kept
at the SCS office in Kiowa.
The site of the five selected detention reservoirs will be surveyed and
depth - capacity tables prepared. For each of these reservoirs a resurvey
and a corrected depth- capacity table will be made by the SCS after each
large measured run of floodwater into the reservoir. If no major floods
occur then at least once every five years resurveys extending upstream
far enough to measure deposits above spillway level will be made of the
selected reservoirs. The successive resurveys and capacity tables will
be compared to determine how much sediment is being produced and the nature
of sediment rate
Permanent photograph stations will be marked throughout the watershed so
that "before" and "after" pictures can be taken to show program progress
and visual effects of "A" and "B" measures.
Copies of all the hydrologic and sedimentation data, including gage readings,
calculations, and conclusions will be accumulated in the work unit office at
Kiowa and permanently filed at the Area office.
