Floodwater and Sediment Damage Reduction
After each flood occurring during the period of evaluation, work unit
personnel will accumulate gage data and will appraise the damage within
the project area. For each flood of any consequence the following deter-
minations will be made:
a. Damages (with measures installed).
b. Damages that would have occurred without the measures.
c. Benefit creditable to the program. An annual report will
be made by the Colorado Area 10 Office of SCS with help
from the E 8x P Unit of the benefits accruing to the
program.
To accomplish these purposes it will be necessary for Service personnel
to assemble basic data which will include:
a. Extent of the flood plain. This will be shown on a map
or by acres for stream reaches.
b. Land use and crop yields in the flood plain and the
damages to land and crops by flooding, washing, and
sedimentation.
c. Amount of precipitation and the time involved at rain
gage stations supplemented by information from local
residents, the Corps of Engineers, and other sources.
d. In the area affected by a flood, peak and volume flows
at stream and reservoir gages by slope -area or other
calculations when stream gages are inadequate or do.not fit
the run -off situation.
e. Sediment reduction by measuring sediment accumulations
through a re- survey of five representative reservoir
areas following each major flood and from stream sediment
