High and Low flow design
r
a
v
v
c
0
N
U
v
Figure 15. Approximate geometry of the U- Structures proposed for the lower reach of the
Boating Park (please note that the overbank geometry is for illustrative purposes only.
It has been concluded, in water court, that this type of design creates critical flow at the crest
of the control structure and does capture, control and divert the flows of the river for a
variety of flows. Other similar structures have been found to capture, control and divert
flows across similar ranges of flows as are expected in the Animas. Furthermore, these types
of structures have been implemented in similar rivers without creating an impact to the 100
year flood plain. These structures will be designed, using the HEGRAS software, to ensure
that there will be no net negative effect to the floodplain. All necessary permits and
authorizations to this effect will be received before construction begins. It can be concluded
from Figures 14 and 15 that the structures on the upper reach of the boating park can
capture, control and divert the flows of the Animas River up to 1400 cfs. The lower
structures will be able to capture control and divert the flows of the Animas River up to
flows of 1800 cfs. Due to the low and high flow geometry these Structures are designed to
function well during a whole gamut of flows.
33
-80 -60 -40 -20 0 20 40 60 80
Lateral Station (width)
