Animas River at this location and this geometry will create the types of experiences desired
by the expected users of this park as defined in this report.
The lower Structures, Structures 10, 11, and 12, will feature a wider and flatter aspect ratio.
There are several reasons for the differences in aspect ratio at the two locations. The
primary reason is that the existing aspect ratios of the existing river are currently different at
the two locations. The imposition of a wider, flatter aspect ratio at Upper Smelter would
cause sedimentation, erosion, and would evolve the existing morphology at this site. The
converse is also true for the Lower Smelter Rapids Structures. These Structures would
create a flooding risk and erosion if a deeper aspect ratio were used. However, it is the
designer's opinion that the wider aspect ratio at the lower Smelter Structures will provide for
increased variety across the face of hydraulic and that the narrower, yet slightly deeper aspect
ratio of the Upper Smelter drops will provide a similar attraction through increased power
and surginess. Figure 13 shows the preliminary design calculations for Structure #12, the
widest of the proposed structures. These calculations were made under the same usage
assumptions used in Figure 12 for purposes of comparison.
30
