U- Structure Design Guidance Sheet
colt Shi I 2/15/20061 1 Recr tion Enaineerina and Plannin
303 545 -5883
Pro'ect:
Upper Smelter Boatina Park
=donot to
= values that can be adjusted
his spreadsheet can be used to help develop average depths of high and low flow channels. Actual dimensions
an be set during final design using these numbers as a guideline. Please only adjust cells that are blue. Other
ells should not be adjusted at all. Plot values at the bottom can be inserted into HEC -RAS directly using cut and
aste. All computations are made using the wier equation and are separated using Shipley's vertical separation
iethod. Dimensions are based on width PROJECTIONS (i.e. the plot shows shadow on the wall of light shown
trough channels). Arc length is not shown. Analysis is vertical so location of low flow within high flow is not
nportant and will vary according to project constraints. This is not a comprehensive listing of limitations of
nalysis and spreadsheet should be used by experienced designer for guidance purposes only.
Figure 12. Approximate weir calculations for the upper structures at the proposed Smelter
boating Park.
Figure 12 shows that at a low flow width of 35 feet the depth in the low flow will be 2.2 feet
at 300 cfs. A similar calculation reveals a depth of 1.5 feet at 200 cfs. The high flow width
of 56 feet creates a center flow depth of 4.93 feet at a flow of roughly 1400 cfs. Both this
location and the Lower Smelter Rapids Structures show a high flow side depth of roughly
2.7 feet at recommended flows. These dimensions are appropriate for the character of the
Wt
-
©-
-®
Figure 12.
