Smelter Boating Park <br />Figure 5. Proposed improvements at the Smelter Boating Park. <br />Enhancements at Smelter are intended to provide a destination park and play facility while <br />preserving and enhancing the existing slalom facility. Enhancements will also be tailored to <br />improve the site characteristics for rafting, instruction, and navigation. This site also <br />leverages existing facilities including parking, trail, access, and an existing slalom gate system. <br />Development at this site will require extensive bank /access improvements in order to <br />reinforce existing areas that suffer from erosion. <br />Structures 1, 2, 3, and 4 are rough approximations of existing features already in the river. <br />These are shown to illustrate the character of the river upstream of the Smelter Drop. <br />Enhancements to reinforce these structures are recommended, but not required, in the initial <br />phase. U structure 5 is an existing drop structure, nicknamed "Smelter,” that would be <br />redesigned, reshaped, and reinforced in order to permanently capture, control, and divert the <br />entire Animas River.
