Colorado State Office <br />Soil Conservation Service <br />Denver, Colorado 80202 <br />October, 1969 <br />THE WATERSHED PROGRAM IN COLORADO <br />(Pilot and Public Law 566) <br />Applications (Public Law 566 <br />Seventy applications for assistance under the Small Watershed Program have <br />been received by the State Soil Conservation Board. Four are duplications. <br />Fifty -two of these applications have been forwarded to the Washington office <br />requesting planning authorization. Remaining applications are in various <br />stages of planning; have been tabled by the State Soil Conservation Board <br />representing the Governor of Colorado; have been suspended or terminated; <br />are undergoing preliminary investigation; and some have been feasible but <br />local sponsors would not accept proposal or could not assure land rights. <br />Of the 52 applications forwarded to the Washington office 27 have received <br />planning authorization. Fourteen of the 27 have received authorization for <br />operations. Construction has been completed on 9 of the 14. <br />Pilot Project <br />In addition to the 14 projects authorized for operations under Public Law <br />566, the previously authorized Kiowa Pilot Project was completed June 30, <br />1961. <br />Watershed Projects in Colorado with Construction Complete (Pilot and PL 566 <br />Kioaa Creek Pilot Watershed Project (Elbert and E1 Paso Counties) - This <br />project includes 75,560 acres and 62 floodwater - retarding dams. It <br />was completed June 30, 1961 at a total cost of $1,274,175 of which <br />$284,953.was local contribution. A comprehensive project evaluation <br />program was completed during fiscal year 1967. <br />Wray Watershed Project (PL 566, Yuma County) - This project contains 2,390 <br />acres and was sponsored by the Hale Soil Conservation District and <br />the City of Wray. The purpose of the project, which was completed <br />in the spring of 1963 with the seeding of six retarding structures, <br />was to protect the agricultural floodplains and the City of Wray <br />from flood damage. The final project cost was $262,076 ($22,182 <br />local) . <br />
