W A T E R S H E D P R O B L E M S A N D N E E D S <br />FLOOD PREVENTION <br />Flooding is not a problem in this watershed. Infrequent minor <br />damages occur from flash floods to the Trinchera Irrigation Company <br />canals. <br />EROSION AND SEDIMENT DAMAGES <br />Erosion and sediment damages are not a problem. Infrequent flash <br />floods deposit sand and debris in - the Trinchera Irrigation Company canals. <br />AGRICULTURAL WATER MANAGEMENT <br />Irrigation <br />The Trinchera Irrigation Company operates and maintains a system <br />of two storage reservoirs with delivery canals and Laterals to farms. <br />Diversion of irrigation water is from Ute, Sangre de Cristo, Indian and <br />Trinchera Creeks. <br />The combination of storage and direct diversion irrigation waiver <br />is supplemented by about 160 wells. At the present time about 54 farmers <br />are irrigating about 11,640 acres. <br />Distribution System Rehabilitation <br />The Trinchera Canal Company was organized in 1907 to irrigate 60,000 <br />acres. At this time construction of the Mountain Home Reservoir and <br />related canal system was started. In 1911 the company was out of operating <br />funds and the Trinchera Irrigation District was formed and issued $650,000 <br />in bonds to be paid to the defunct Trinchera Canal Company for all. water <br />rights and land. Construction of 'the Smith Reservoir was started and the <br />canal and lateral system was completed. An additional $250,000 in bonds <br />were issued to pay the construction cost of the works of improvement <br />started by the Canal Company. <br />In 1944 the District went into the hands of receivers and the present <br />Trinchera Irrigation Company was formed. This is a stock company, stock <br />was issued in the form of water stock, which is negotiable. The total <br />amount of water available each year is allocated to the shares issued. <br />The number of acres or shares were reduced to about 1 <br />In 1958 the stockholders voted to secure a .loan from the Wichita <br />Bank for Cooperatives, $125,000 to construct the Indian Creek Diversion <br />Works and Diversion Canal and the Sangre de Cristo- Trinchera Diversion <br />Works and Diversion Canal. This work was completed in 1960 and 1963 <br />2 <br />
