Town of Vail - Town Council - Town Council Highlights - Archive - June 12, 2001 Page 6 of 8 <br />addressing the United Nations roundtable group while they were in Vail. <br />Noting the success of an "arts summit" held recently to help refine a pla <br />for cultural components within the proposed Vail Center, Chuck Ogilby <br />said a "learning summit" would take place from 9 to 11 a.m. on June 18 <br />the library. The purpose of the public meeting, he said, is to create a cle <br />understanding of the proposed learning center component and its <br />interface with the conference component. <br />T <br />- -Other <br />Kevin Foley inquired about the status of repair and /or replacement of th <br />pedestrian bridge over Gore Creek. Options are forthcoming. Noting the <br />presence of dangerous rocks, Foley suggested the need to sweep the <br />Frontage Road shoulder adjacent to the Donovan Park construction site <br />improve safety for bicyclists. In addition, Foley suggested improving <br />signage and /or detour routes for the recreation path impacted by the <br />Donovan Park construction. Foley said the current configuration and <br />notification requires bicyclists to backtrack. <br />Diana Donovan inquired about provisions of a new state law that require <br />minutes to be taken during executive sessions. An overview of the new <br />law will be circulated. Also, Donovan reminded staff to follow up on a <br />request by the Vail Recreation District to extend bus service on Vail Val[ <br />Drive to better accommodate visitors to the Nature Center. In addition, s <br />asked for clarification regarding boundaries of the July 4th curfew, which <br />will be townwide, and noted her disapproval in adding the Avon firework <br />to a listing of Vail's holiday activities in a town - sponsored welcome letter <br />the Lacrosse Shootout teams. Also, Donovan inquired about the fencing <br />Donovan Park's phase -two area; expressed her opposition to a <br />consultant's suggestion to rename the town the Resort of Vail; inquired <br />about an independent review of the Vail Center business plan; and urge <br />fellow Councilmembers to read the notes from a Vail Recreation District <br />board retreat. As a follow -up, a joint meeting between the Town Council <br />and Vail Recreation District is scheduled for June 26. Lastly, Donovan <br />expressed concerns about the role and status of future Town of Vail - <br />issued contracts should the Vail Valley Tourism and Convention Bureau <br />( VVTCB) merge with the Vail Valley Chamber of Commerce. At the <br />suggestion of Donovan and Councilman Rod Slifer, the VVTCB board wi <br />be asked to attend an upcoming Council meeting to discuss the merger <br />possibility and related impacts. Slifer represents the Council on the <br />VVTCB board. <br />Chuck Ogilby shared a request by Steve Pope, publisher of the Vail Dail <br />to exempt the Ore House location on Bridge Street from the town's <br />newsrack criteria. The criteria identifies street width, slope and other <br />factors in determining locations for newsracks and street furniture within <br />Vail Village and Lionshead.
