  -
SCOPE OF WORK
GENTLE EARTH EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES
AND COLORADO WATER CONSERVATION BOARD
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
GENTLE EARTH EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES will produce, modify and deliver 53 Water
Cycle kits to school districts in the Rio Grande, Lower Arkansas and Dolores River
Basins. In addition, Gentle Earth will provide support for those school districts in the
use of the Water Cycle kit through the end of the 2000/2001 school year.
THE PRODUCT
The Water Cycle is a cross-curricular science kit that provides teachers with everything
needed to teach a one-quarter unit on water. The kit is closely tied to state science,
literacy and writing standards as well as to current pedagogical theory.
In the instructional manual, teachers find nine weeks of lessons on the physical process
of the water cycle, local weather and aridity and water usage as it applies to 8-year
olds. Reproducible worksheets, exploration guides and homework assignments are
also included in the manual, as well as assessment tools to measure student learning.
The kit is housed in a large plastic box which contains a water library of seven books,
two videos, a music/literature compact disk, the CWCB's Water Resources CD, and two
posters, as well as exploratory materials for science and art activities. Everything
needed to teach the unit is included, with the exception of items normally found in an
elementary classroom.
The Water Cycle is one of a set of science/social studies kits called Water's Ways,
created by the Water Resources Departmerit, Colorado Springs Utilities, and several EI
Paso County Schoot districts, including Districts 12 and 2. These organizations were
supported by a team of curriculum development experts, including Dr. Nancy Kellogg of
Boulder. Over the course of four years, the Utility and the Districts worked together,
revising and refining the materials to fulfill several goals, as listed below.
1. To provide a clear and balanced conservation message to future water consumers
and link both teachers and students back to the water utility and other community
water education resources.
2. To be integrated into the regular curricular offerings of the school districts so that it
did not meet the fate of too many expensive conservation materials that are used
once and often discarded.
Appendix A to Contract C150054
