STATEMENT NO. 2 OF THE FORT IJ(R GAN CHAT -IBI R OF COiT.EVIERCE TO THE
COLOR00 WATER CONSERVATION BOARD
On September 13 1951, the Narrows Dam Committee of the Fort i:Iorgan Chamber of
Commerce filed a statement with the Colorado Water Conservation Board. The state —
ment liras approved by the Board of Directors of the Chamber and emphasized three
points;
1. That the building of t e Narrows Dam would cause the destruction of a
large acreage of the fertile ' Valley, resulting in loss of taxes to
Morgan County and loss of business to Fort Liorgan, and urged, in the event
that the dam was built, that new compers ating acreage in the immediate area
be made available to the displaced farmers in the , eldon Valley.
2, That, in the event the Narrows Dam is built and the Union Pacific is
required to relocate its tracks, that the railroad choose the route into
Fort Morgan, that route being the logical one both from the standpoint of
the community and the railroad.
3. That, if the Narrows Dam is built, that its location, capacity and
operation meet with the approval of local water interests and the Colorado
Water Conservation Board.
The Board o` Directors of the Fort 14organ Chamber of Commerce at a meeting
held on December 19, 1951, re— affirmed its position on the three points above
mentioned and went further on record as follows:
Maile we recognize that some form of dam and reservoir is needed for
flood control and irrigation storage, not only on the South Platte River,
but also on Bijou and Kiowa Creeks, the Board of Directors is opposed to
the construction of the Narrows Dam for the reasons outlined in Point 1
on the Committee's statement and for their deep concern for the residents
of the Weldon Valley who would be subjected to great personal hardship in
the loss of their homes.
Respectfully submitted,
Fort 1.1organ Chamber of Commerce
December 19, 1951
f:" ord Johnson,
bec.: etary
