GUNNISON COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
District was called to order. County Manager DeVore reported that the County's airline
consultant, Kent Myers, and the Rural Transportation Authority have been discussing the
need to have strong summer marketing to coordinate with the daily flight from Houston.
Club Med vacation package and Saab automobile raffle -type giveaways are being pursued.
Gunnison Country Chamber of Commerce Director Tammy Scott obtained a cost estimate
from Hill and Company for specific summer flight advertising, and discussed that option with
the Tourism Tax Panel. The estimated cost is $40,000. The types of advertising included
in this estimate were summarized. The Tourism Association has agreed to
reallocate$ 40,000 of their funds to the Tourism Tax Panel for this planned advertising.
Moved by Commissioner Starr, seconded by Commissioner Anderson to amend the current
budget for the Tourism Association by deleting $40,000 from that budget and allocating it to
the Tourism Tax Panel for the purpose of marketing through Hill and Company for the
Continental Airlines flights out of Houston this summer. Motion passed unanimously.
County Manager DeVore also reported that the Rural Transportation Authority will send
letters to every Gunnison County property owner who has a Houston mailing address. The
letters will advertise the Houston summer flights. Chairperson Field suggested that the
letters be sent to property owners with Dallas addresses as well.
The meeting of the Gunnison River Valley Marketing District was adjourned at 4:20 p.m. and
the Gunnison County Commissioners meeting was called back to order.
COMMISSIONER COMMENTS: State tourism funding, ownership of the Willows Assisted
Living , and potential financing for the Tenderfoot Child Care Center were briefly discussed.
Commissioner Starr noted that CDOT intends to complete its Highway 135 project in the
upcoming two building seasons. He suggests that the Board host a public meeting with
CDOT to discuss these plans. He will discuss possible arrangements for the meeting with
CDOT.
UNSCHEDULED CITIZENS: Frank Vader and Steve Mills were present to discuss the
Catholic Church's plans to demolish the old City Market building which the church now
owns. Frank Vader explained that many of the materials will be recycled, but approximately
350 -450 cubic yards will need to be hauled to the Landfill. He reported that the Montrose
County Landfill offers a discount for construction debris, and requested that Gunnison
County allow the same discount for the Catholic Church project. County Manager DeVore
contacted Public Works Director Crosby via phone and she said that the $3 per cubic yard
discount was agreeable to her for this purpose. Chairperson Field commented that the
Board may want to consider allowing a discount for future projects as well. He determined
that it was the consensus of the Board to allow the $3 per cubic yard discount, but it will
need to be ratified at the next Board meeting since this item was not on the agenda. In
addition, this discount will be applied to the loads already taken to the landfill for this
purpose.
SCHEDULING: Upcoming meetings were reviewed.
LIQUOR LICENSE AT RODEO GROUNDS: Chairperson Field had previously suggested
that a work session be scheduled to discuss the idea of Gunnison County obtaining a liquor
license for use at the Rodeo Grounds. However, at this time he stated that he has not
received any favorable input for the idea. Commissioner Anderson agreed. The Board
agreed to not pursue a liquor license at this time, but would like to continue hearing new
ideas like this.
TELESCOPE/ OBSERVATORY: Commissioner Anderson asked if the proposed location for
the telescope observatory is correct, or if it should be located east of Gunnison.
