Boating near gunnison
scary for a class 3 boater. Im my opinion "Rattlesnake" (the second rapid, aprox 1/2
mile in length) could be considered a class 4. But this is a ver fun and very beautiful
au
secluded stream. Deffinately my favorite 5 mile stretch of water in the state. 4 M
The Taylor River is lots of fun and creeky. It has nourmerous put is and tke outs
depending on how long and technical a paddle you want. Ask the guys at Three Rivers
Resort for what would suit you best.
Do not attempt Cebolla Creek pronounced - sevoya. It is a fairly easy contiuous
flow creek without many features. Gordon and Banks made a big mistake by including
this creek in the "Bible" as you call it. You must tresspass to put in and there are
numerous barbed wire fences in and around the stream. There is a public access but
intails 4 wheel drive and a mile 1/2 walk in through brush and trees with no trail. The
paddle out is a long hard 3 mile paddle accross the Blue Mesa Resivour dodging fishing
and water skiing boats.
twitch = Posted: May 29 2003, 11:38
Just to add to gosgood's beta...
Upper Taylor Canyon right now is flowing very strong and would be very challenging to
someone seeking class II - III boating . The lower canyon down to 3 rivers might be a
better option at these levels.
Lake Fork of the Gunny is pumping real big right now. The guys at 3 rivers are
running rafting training classes on it right now. I spoke to a good friend who lives
there and works for 3 rivers and they feel that rattlesnake is a V- rapid right now at
this level. I paddled it about a month ago and can definitely see this potential danger.
The "gate" section of the Lake Fork is probably solid III right now as well with the
potential to even have a bit of IV at the big hole. Lake Fork Box, which is the section
above the "gate ", might be pretty enjoyable at these levels. Normally it's all class II,
but with the added H2O it could be a bit more then that.
Definitely give 3 rivers resort a call for some additional beta once you get into the
area. They're great guys and would be happy to help.
With the current Tows in Colorado, my only advice would be to look at everything you
wish to paddle prior to getting in, and even then scout when you're not sure. In the
last several days there have been numerous incidents on class II & III water out here
as a direct result of the above normal (for the last few years) flows.
That being said ... get down here 'cause the getting is g000000d!!!!
MC
Sugsy & Posted: May 29 2003, 15:42
My brother lives in Lake City, about an hour south of Gunny. We ran the Lake Fork
Redbridge section a couple days ago. I agree that it is a little intimidating for a class 3
http: / /mountainbuzz.comlcgi- bin /forumslikonboard.cgi ?s =3 fDb22cd0128ffff ;act= ST;f= 9;t =3... 7/8/2003
