Evans Gulch. The population for Leadville in 1880 was 14,820 and by 1960 the
population was reported as 4,008.
In 1961 the Parkville Water District was formed by election and court order. On
February 1, 1965 the District acquired the Leadville Water Company through
condemnation proceedings for a price of $895,130. The District's service area covers
approximately 4.3 square miles including the City of Leadville and adjacent suburban
development. The population of Leadville is estimated at 2,867 and the District currently
serves approximately 2,336 municipal and commercial customers. The District's primary
source of supply and raw-water storage continues to be through Evans Gulch. In the
mid 1980's a water treatment plant was completed to treat the supply from Evans Gulch
and two clear-water storage tanks were added to the system. The District has
incorporated an additional source of supply from three wells along the East Fork of the
Arkansas River. Historically available sources from lowa Gulch, Empire Gulch, and the
Canterbury Tunnel are currently inoperable due to the conditions of the facilities or
federal treatment regulations.
2.4. SERVICE AREA AND CUSTOMERS
The District's boundary encompasses 4.3 square miles. Within the District's boundaries
there are approximately 1,964 residential taps and 372 commercial taps. The District
also serves six taps that are outside of its service boundary. In total the District serves
about 2,336 customers.
2.5.
