Educate local tourism businesses /community so that they are able to provide accurate information to
potential visitors.
The Colorado Restaurant Association is asking all foodservice operators and customers to take the
following steps to reduce water usage as part of the state's emergency drought response plan:
• Ask customers if they would like water instead of automatically serving it.
(Serving water on request can significantly reduce a restaurant's water usage. According to the
Denver Water Board, it takes four glasses of water to clean one water glass.)
• Thaw frozen foods in the refrigerator, not under running water, if possible.
• Purchase a water - efficient dishwasher and wash only full loads.
• Soak pots and pans before handwashing them.
• Cook vegetables with a minimum amount of water and use the cooking water for soup stock, if
possible.
• Replace spray heads in dishwasher to reduce water flow. Use water from steam tables to wash down
cooking area.
• Train staff to tarn off the water promptly when they are not using it.
• Check for and repair leaks in faucets and toilets.
6. Fishing — Based on information from the Division of Wildlife, recreational fishing could be impacted
due to drought.
• Hatcheries/Fisheries could potentially be unable to stock specific waters.
• Low water levels in reservoirs could lead to fish kill.
RECOMMENDED MITIGATION / RESPONSE:
• Hatcheries/Fisheries Offset locations that can not be stocked by stocking other areas and informing
the public of the alternate locations.
• Instream Flows Co- operate with watershed groups to maintain instream flows.
• Water Exchanges Trout Unlimited is working on a strategy to find willing donors or diverters who
would accept compensation, either for making a water loan to the Colorado Water Conservation
Board, the only entity allowed to hold an instream water right in Colorado, or to a downstream
irrigator where exchanging the water downstream would have the effect of keeping a particular reach
of river wet.
• Public Outreach/Education: Counteract negative publicity by reminding the public that they can
enjoy fishing in Colorado even if water is low. Keep the public optimistic about tourism's viability
during drought and heightened fire danger.
Educate local tourism businesses /community so that they are able to provide accurate information to
potential visitors.
