SECTION IV
PROJECT ALTERNATIVES
Alternative Descriptions and Conceptual Designs
In 2008 the Snowmass Water and Sanitation District purchased Ziegier Reservoir with
the intention of enlarging the reservoir and connecting the reservoir to an existing raw
water delivery system located approximately 1,400' from the reservoir.
Several alternatives were considered.
- Alternative 9- No Immediate Action - Delay construction of pump house, Divide
Flow Contro/ Building and installation of water line until expansion of the
reservorr.
This alternative was rejected. Until a pump station is constructed the reservoir is
of no benefit to the District.
- Alternative 2- Make use of the existing reservoir prior to expansion of the
reservoir - Instal/ portable Gensets and temporary pump sfation and construct
fhe Divide F/ow Contro/ Building.
This alternative was rejected and conceptual designs were not considered.
The existing reservoir is currently supplied by an 8" ductile/cast iron supply line
but doesn't have any electric power or pump station at the reservoir to pump
water to the Districts raw water delivery system. Expending money on pumps,
gensets and constructing a temporary pump house, all of which wouldn't be
usable as part of the Ziegler Reservoir expansion, was an impractical and
wastefu~ approach. fn addition, the construction of above ground temporary
facilities would be prohibited by the reservoir purchase agreement and Pitkin
County Land Use approvals.
1 Alternative 3- Make use of the existing reservoir prior to expansion of the
reservoir- Instal/ a pump house, provide a new electric service and telemetry,
install a new 16" HDPE supply line and construct a Divide Flow Control Building.
This alternative was selected as this project is a point-to-point connection of the
Districts existing raw water delivery system located at the Divide Flow Control
Building to the new Ziegler pump house adjacent to the reservoir. The reservoir
is approximately 1,400' from the Divide Flow Control Building and the connecting
water line can only be installed in the available easement.
5
