(CFTT) supports the application of the Upper Arkansas
Water Conservancy District (The District or UAWCD) for a Water Supply Reserve
Account grant from fhe Arkansas Basin Roundtable. The District's project involves a joint
UAWCD-U.S. Geological Service (USGS) hydrologic water balance study. The phased
study begins in ChafFee County and eventually covers four Arkansas headwaters
counties: Lake, Chaffee, Fremont, and Custer.
Population growth for the Upper Arkansas headwaters region is anticipated to be 72%
from 2000 to 2030, according ta a Statewide Water Supply Initiative (SWSI) Arkansas
Basin 2006 Fact Sheef. The Colorado S#ate Demography OfFice projects that fhe four
counfies in the study area will increase in population from 60% (Fremont) to 160%
{Lake}. UAWCD has more than 6,700 customers in its more #han 2 million acre service
area.
CFTI" recognizes that State funds to assist this small District strategically located at the
headwaters of the Arkansas River will benefi# the public beyond District boundaries. The
study will generate data that can be used by all basin river users whether municipal,
agricultural or recreational. In Chaffee County, municipal users include Buena Vista,
Salida and Poncha Springs; the District serves more than 5,700 municipal water users.
Recreational nver users predominate in Lake County, while Custer County's agricultural
sector represents 10.3% of its economy. CFTT is the largest food growing entity in
Chaffee County, with charitable dis#ribution throughout Southern Colorado.
The study will enable The District in tum to work with local municipalities and
organizations such as CFTT to help them succeed in their missions, while preserving
stewardship of our most valuable natural resource - clean water.
a Colorado Corporafion and 501 (c) (3) PubJic Charity
AII contributions are tax deductible under Secfion 170 of the lntemal Revenue Code
