b. Colorado Squawf~sh
The Colorado squawfish is the largest in size of the four existing species. Fossils of the
mid-Pliocene epoch (about 6 million years ago) indicate that the species had adopted riverine
forms that are similar to modern forms. Historically the Colorado squawfish occurred
throughout the Colorado River Basin.
USFWS is proposing to designate 6 reaches of the Colorado River system (Figure I-2-2) as
critical habitat for the Colorado squawfish. In the Upper Basin, critical habitat is being
proposed for areas of the Green, Yampa, Colorado, White, Gunnison, and San Juan rivers.
Of the historical range of the Colorado squawfish, 29 percent is proposed as critical habitat.
~. ,® `°"
R ~
~
«. r fi YilE3

M `.:
8S
I :.Rift

~ ~d°
" COLORADO
i
i
~ ~ €
3
UTAH
NEVADA f
i I
i A

21.r ~
LIKE
PONE[L ~
N°n
~
\~~~~
dFi1D
/WOYFR

~

I -
G.rminglen
~ OW
ARIZONA
\
uam $ f
N E W
~ I M E X I C O
p
~ i
~
O fAOrnsfn.
Oan
4 ~
~
fR10ENIM

v

4P !~ fF" RaaensR
paf~

~~~ i
i lEGQ1D
ocsiaannax~
.m. ~O" (wan Rw re sd.)
Figure I-2-2.
