Studies of multiple habitat types in a single large river system have been few.
Grabowski and Hiebert (1989) concluded that benthic macroinvertebrate densities in
backwaters of the Green River were higher than those of the river channel and that these
backwaters are important to fishes in the river. From cluster analysis of mean benthic
invertebrate densities, it appears that the seasonally inundated wetland and river
backwater are very similar to a river backwater. From this, it seems appearant that the
seasonally inundated wetland and ephemeral side channel habitat types may be important
to fishes in the Green River.
18
